Add Investment
Quickstart: Adding investments is optional, however strongly recommended in investment accounts. You can add a "Portfolio" investment to reflect the composition of your portfolio. You will need to keep its value updated manually.
To add an investment:
Select an investment type from the dropdown menu
We use FUNData to update prices every day to their closing price. Updates happen late in the day.
For cryptocurrencies, we use the CoinGecko API and can get prices anytime. We restrict the available cryptocurrencies to those with a market-cap over a million USD (according to CoinGecko).
We do not guarantee the data from FUNData or CoinGecko.
If no symbol is given or the symbol is not found, you will need to keep the price updated yourself.
If a symbol is found using FUNData, you need not name the investment as a name will be obtained for you. Otherwise, a name must be given for the investment that is unique for that account.
The search box for ticker name requires 3 letters to start searching, For stocks with 2 letter tickers, use the name of the company to search
If you can not find the ticker for your fund or want to update manually, just enter a name and no ticker.Investment in CAD:
For Canadian Stocks, ETFs, Mutual Funds and Segregated Funds, you can search for the symbol for the investment and the price will be updated automatically on this site using FunData.
Note that some segregated and mutual funds obtained through group and company pension plans may not be found. If you cannot find the FundServ ticker code for your fund on your statements, you can ask for them from your investment advisor or the plan sponsor. They are not always available because group plans negotiate different fee structures for the funds than those available to individual investors and advisors. In that case, just enter a name and no ticker and you will need to update prices manually from your statements.
Note also that segregated mutual funds from insurance companies, may come with different benefits, guarantees and terms. Also we include principle-protected and principle-at-risk notes and other types of funds with maturity dates and guarantees with the mutual funds. IMPORTANT: These terms and guarantees will NOT be considered in the TIME MACHINE. We will assume that the investment will grow at your set required returns and that at term, the investment will be reinvested in a similar type of investment. You can enter a vesting date before which the funds cannot be sold.
Investment in USD:
For ETFs traded on a Canadian exchange in USD, enter as ETF.
For ETFs traded on U.S. stock exchanges enter as US ETF.
For Canadian Mutual Fund in USD, enter as Mutual Fund.
For US Mutual Fund enter as US Mutual Fund.
For US stocks and ETFs, Canadian USD ETFs, and Canadian USD Mutual Funds, you can search for the symbol for the investment and the price will be updated automatically on this site using FunData.
Note that for US ETFs the search will return all US stocks along with the ETFs, Make sure you have right ticker for your ETF!
We do not have data for US mutual funds, so although you can enter a YAHOO ticker and a link will be provided to the fund's YAHOO page, the price will not be automatically updated and you will need to update it manually.
Investment in a cryptocurrency:
You can search by name or symbol and select the cryptocurrency from the drop-down menu. The price in both CAD and USD will be found using the CoinGecko API. You can then update all your cryptocurrencies' prices at any time by clicking the button above your ACCOUNTs table.
Investment in another currency:
For stocks, you can enter a YAHOO ticker and a link will be provided to the fund's YAHOO page, the price will not be automatically updated and you will need to update it manually.
If you hold just the currency, you can enter it as a currency investment and select the currency from the dropdown menu. We update currency exchange rates once a day from the European Central Bank.
