Summary Cash Flow — Year Check-in

The Summary Cash Flow report presents the TIME MACHINE results in a compact table. For each period, it summarizes cash coming in, cash going out, net saving or withdrawal, and net worth.

The same report can be viewed in today’s dollars, discounted for inflation, or in future dollars.

Current-year rows

For an improved Year Check-in, the ordinary first-year row is divided into two periods:

  • YTD: January 1 through the Check-in date.
  • Rest of the year: The TIME MACHINE projection from the run date through December 31.

Together, these two rows describe the current calendar year. A separate Full-year report combines them. A Full-year row is not added to this table because it would duplicate the amounts already presented in the two partial-year rows.

The YTD row reconstructs the elapsed part of the year using the information already in the plan and any actual amounts supplied through Improve Check-in. Blank values are estimated where reasonably possible. When a total depends on account or loan activity that has not been entered, it may remain blank. A blank value means unknown, not zero.

The Rest-of-year row is the same projection that the regular TIME MACHINE produces for the current year. It starts with current balances and shows the planned activity from the run date through December 31.

Cash In

Cash In includes:

  • External income: Entered income, CPP/QPP, OAS and other calculated government benefits.
  • Account withdrawals: Withdrawals from accounts, grouped by account type.
  • Loan proceeds: Additional amounts borrowed and made available to the plan.

In the YTD row, external income is estimated from the dated income entries in the plan. Account withdrawals and loan proceeds come from the Check-in information when supplied.

Cash Out

Cash Out includes:

  • Spending: Entered expenses, insurance premiums and spending generated by PRIORITIES.
  • Taxes: Income taxes, CPP/QPP contributions and EI premiums where applicable.
  • Account deposits: Contributions made to accounts, grouped by account type.
  • Loan payments: Payments made toward loans.

For YTD, spending is estimated from the dated expense entries in the plan. Taxes and deductions use actual amounts entered for the Check-in when available and TIME MACHINE estimates otherwise. Account deposits and loan payments come from the Check-in information when supplied.

Net savings

Net savings summarizes the net amount directed to accounts and debt. A positive amount indicates net accumulation or debt repayment. A negative amount indicates that withdrawals and new borrowing exceeded deposits and loan payments during the period.

The YTD net-savings amount can be calculated only when the required account and loan activity is sufficiently complete. If some activity is unknown, the value remains blank rather than treating the missing amounts as zero.

Net worth

Net worth is the value of accounts and real estate, less outstanding loans. Account balances are grouped by account type.

  • The YTD row shows net worth using current balances.
  • The Rest-of-year row shows the net worth projected for December 31.
  • Later rows show projected values at the end of each year.

Colours and graphs

The table’s heat-map colours help identify relatively high and low values. The YTD and Rest-of-year rows cover partial years, however, so their amounts should not be compared with later full-year amounts without considering the length of each period.

The graphs continue to show the TIME MACHINE projection from the run date onward. The reconstructed YTD period is not plotted as though it were another full projected year.
