Metal investment
From ACCOUNTS, click Edit Investments for the account, then Edit beside the metal. To add a new metal, use + Add CAD Investment and select Metal.
Price, quantity and value
- Gold (XAU), silver (XAG), platinum (XPT) and palladium (XPD): enter the quantity in troy ounces. The price is CAD per troy ounce.
- Copper (HG): enter the quantity in pounds. The price is CAD per pound.
Metal prices and values are in CAD. The value is calculated from the price multiplied by the quantity. Select the account that holds the metal, and check the valuation date associated with the price.
Prices are updated nightly using Gold API spot prices, which exclude dealer premiums. The latest stored price is shown on this form. You can enter a price and valuation date manually. If an automatic update is unavailable, the existing valuation is retained.
Book value
Enter the total book value (adjusted cost base) of the holding in CAD. This is the book value of the whole holding, rather than the cost per ounce or pound. It is used to calculate capital gains and losses when metal is sold in a non-registered account. The form requires a book value greater than zero, at least $0.01.
Expected return and asset allocation
Enter the expected yearly capital-appreciation growth rate for TIME MACHINE projections. Metals have no interest, dividend or capital distributions in the model. They are classified as Global / Other.
When long-term rates are enabled and the holding has not been opted out, the TIME MACHINE uses the long-term capital-appreciation rate for OTHER assets from the configured switch date.
Price history and risk
The chart shows the available CAD price history. When enough history is available, the suggested risk rank uses daily price volatility over the available last six years, on the same 1–20 scale as other investments. You can edit this rank.
Market simulations and market-crash tests apply the common stock capital-return path to metals. Portfolio analysis and optimization use the metal’s CAD price history to calculate historical returns and covariance with the other holdings.
Fees and cash
Buying and selling fees can be entered as an amount in CAD or a percentage. The Debit the cash investment? checkbox uses the account’s current Cash balance to fund the entry; otherwise, the Cash balance can be adjusted separately.
Click Save and continue to save the metal holding.
