Detailed Cash Flow — Year Check-in

The Detailed Cash Flow report presents the TIME MACHINE results for all years, with a separate column for each year or current-year period. It provides detailed Cash In, Cash Out, Taxes, Balance Sheet and Account Gains tables.

The report can be viewed in today’s dollars, discounted for inflation, or in future dollars. Select a column heading to open its Year report. Many row headings can also be selected to chart that value over time.

Current-year columns

For an improved Year Check-in, the current calendar year is divided into:

  • YTD: January 1 through the Check-in date.
  • Rest of the year: The TIME MACHINE projection from the run date through December 31.

The Full-year amount is not added as another column in this report because it would duplicate the two current-year periods and make an already detailed report considerably wider. A separate Full-year report combines the YTD and Rest-of-year amounts.

The YTD values reconstruct the elapsed part of the year using information already in the plan and any actual amounts supplied through Improve Check-in. Blank values are estimated where reasonably possible. When a value cannot be estimated reliably, it remains blank. A blank value means unknown, not zero.

The Rest-of-year values are the same current-year projections produced by a regular TIME MACHINE run. They begin with the balances recorded on the run date and project the plan through December 31.

Cash In and Cash Out

The Cash In and Cash Out tables provide more detail than the Summary Cash Flow report. Subtotals are shown by income type, expense type and account type where applicable.

For YTD:

  • Income and spending are estimated from the amounts and dates entered in the plan, including applicable recurring and one-time entries that occurred before the Check-in date.
  • Account contributions and withdrawals come from the Check-in information when supplied.
  • Additional loan borrowing and loan payments come from the Check-in information when supplied.
  • Taxes and deductions paid use entered amounts when available and TIME MACHINE estimates otherwise.

The Rest-of-year columns show the income, spending, account activity, borrowing, loan payments and final tax payments projected from the run date through December 31.

Taxes

Personal income taxes are calculated for the complete calendar year, even though the TIME MACHINE begins its projection on the run date. Tax brackets, credits, deductions and marginal tax rates are annual calculations and cannot be divided meaningfully into independent YTD and Rest-of-year tax returns.

The YTD column therefore shows information that belongs specifically to the elapsed period, including taxes and deductions already paid and taxable non-registered investment income entered or estimated through the Check-in date.

The adjacent current-year column retains the complete annual tax calculation from the regular TIME MACHINE report. It includes full-year taxable income, taxes calculated for the year, credit for taxes and deductions already paid, and the resulting amount still payable or refundable. It should not be interpreted as a separately calculated Rest-of-year tax return.

Balance Sheet

Balance-sheet amounts are values at a particular date rather than flows over a period. The two current-year columns therefore represent:

  • YTD: Current account, loan and property values on the Check-in date.
  • December 31: Values projected by the TIME MACHINE at the end of the year.

Net worth is the total value of accounts and properties, less outstanding loans. When there is a spouse, individual and household totals are provided.

Account Gains

The YTD portion of the Account Gains table is an account reconciliation rather than a detailed investment-performance calculation. When the previous year-end balance, owner contributions and withdrawals are all known, the report calculates:

Implied growth / other activity = Current balance − Previous year-end balance − Owner contributions + Withdrawals

This residual may include investment gains or losses, interest and distributions, transfers, fees, employer or government contributions, contributions made by another person, currency changes, or differences in the information supplied. It should not automatically be interpreted as investment return.

The Rest-of-year section shows the investment gains projected by the TIME MACHINE from the run date through December 31, broken down by account and growth type where applicable.

Charts and navigation

YTD amounts cover only part of a year and are not treated as another complete annual observation in the long-term charts. The regular graphs continue to show the projected plan from the TIME MACHINE run date onward.

The navigation bar provides access to the TimeTable, Summary Cash Flow, Year Check-in, individual Year reports, CPP/QPP report, printable Report and Excel download. The Year Check-in report also provides direct access to the YTD, Rest-of-year and Full-year reports for the current year.
